What is PFA?

PFA is a fully fluorinated copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and a perfluoroalkoxy vinyl ether. Because it is melt-processable, it can be injection-moulded and extruded into complex parts — unlike conventional PTFE, which is sintered.

Why ultra-pure matters

In a semiconductor fab, metal-ion contamination must be held to the parts-per-billion level. Ultra-pure PFA controls extractable metal ions at ppb, which is why it is used for wafer carriers, chemical-delivery fittings, valves, tubing and filters in 14 nm and sub-7 nm processes.

Key properties

Continuous service to 260 °C, near-universal resistance to acids, bases and organic solvents, a low coefficient of friction, and excellent electrical insulation with a dielectric constant around 2.1.

Choosing a grade

Melt-flow rate decides the processing route — lower flow for extruded tubing and linings, higher flow for injection-moulded fittings. Semiconductor grades add tighter metal-ion control on top of the standard industrial grades.
